This ‘Open Water Swim’ Journey started some 20 years ago swimming in lakes, rivers, mountain pools and the sea including some exhilarating self guided coasteering trips. You learn about the sea quickly when you jump into frothing swell between rocky outcrops on a cold winters day!
Head coach Binney has been swimming for as long as she can remember, in various pools throughout Europe and the USA or in the sea on family holidays to Cornwall, competing to a National Level and represented the British Police Swim Team. Having a brother who represented GB at an Olympic and 2 Commonwealth Games gives a valuable insight into the dedication it takes to become an elite swimmer.
After many years in the Third Sector, as a CEO in Safety/Risk Education, a career change allowed Binney to revisit her passion for swimming. The In The Wet Stuff concept was developed after watching Alistair Brownlee win Gold in the Triathlon and Keri-Anne Payne narrowly missing out on a Bronze during the 2012 Olympics. Together with Rick they introduced Open Water Swim Coaching into various lakes/quarries in the Midlands. Having qualified as Beach Lifeguards during a cold week in April of 2013, Rick took on the role of Safety Advisor for all open water sessions.
Within the year Binney had also taken on the role of Head Coach (after working under Mark Perry, Ex-Olympic GB Open Water Coach), coaching the Performance Squad of a Midlands Club, whilst Rick became the club’s first dedicated volunteer Masters Coach. A move to Cornwall in 2016 brought In The Wet Stuff to The Roseland on the South Coast.
Combined experience of coaching swimmers and triathletes young and old from complete newbies to British Age Groupers. They believe that everyone can be taught to swim in the right environment and enjoy the pleasures of swimming whether in a pool, open water wetsuit swimming or skins swimming in the sea, for pleasure, bucket list or competitively.
Safety is always their number one priority with suitable safety craft/equipment available at all sessions.
Experience of competing in all sorts of events including pool, lake and sea swim triathlons, with Rick taking on the longer distances of Half (70.3) and Full (140.6) Triathlons.
